Why Subject Lines Are important in Email Marketing
I get hundreds of emails on my Google account everyday, and I delete most of them even without reading the content of the mails. The subject line and the sender address I believe plays a greater role in the success of email marketing than the content itself. You don't really need to be a rocket scientist to tell this. You can say this by just reading the subject lines of your own inbox.
Tell me frankly, do you ever click on emails that are coming from senders like 'customersupport@xyz.com' or 'responder@abc.com' ? No. or for another instance, do you ever click on email subjects that say 'Surprise unfolds inside, please click'. Or a long subject line that goes on to say 'Click for a discount...blah blah blah'. These are just a few examples of shabbily written subject lines and email addresses.
I believe the subject lines and email addresses should be attractive enough to catch the attention of the users immediately. And get rid of the traditional method of email addresses. Get bold enough to use your company name directly. This will not only make the receivers aware of your mail, rather it will also increase the trust and association between you and the receivers.
Your subject lines should be interesting and SHORT. Don't be greedy guys. There is no need to show the whole cake to the customer at the display table. If baked well, a pastry is enough to do the trick. (Oops, you guessed it right, it's lunch time... But back to the blog again) Your subject line should essentially contain the message but make it catchy. Use intelligent words. Do not dare venture into words that are abusive or derogatory, your mail might be regarded as spams. As a matter of fact mails with words like Free, Click, Discount too are being reported as spam mails.
It is a good idea to get personal with your receivers. Meaning you can use their name or their city. Location or any part of their general information in your subject line, to tell them that it is of their interest and that they have already opted to receive these emails.
